WAINWRIGHT, Alta. - A Quebec-based soldier was killed in a single-vehicle roll-over accident Monday at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright.
The soldier had been deployed from the base in Valcartier, Que., to help with the return of vehicles and equipment after a month-long training exercise, said Capt. Tom St. Denis, public affairs officer at the Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre.
"My understanding is he was the sole occupant of the vehicle," said St. Denis. "It was just an accident and he was killed."
Capt. Mathieu Dufour of CFB Valcartier identified the soldier as a member of 5 Battalion Services of Canada.
"He was contributing to bringing out vehicles and equipment that were used for the previous month of training," said Dufour. "We don't exactly know what was the cause (of the accident)."
Dufour said the soldier had been driving a 10-tonne truck.
He was pronounced dead at hospital.
St. Denis said 2,500 soldiers had been training for their rotation into Afghanistan in the summer.
"They'd been here since mid-April but they had finished up their exercise," he said. "Most of those people were on their way out and to assist in getting the equipment back, a unit in Valcartier had sent some other soldiers here, after the exercise, to help move the stuff back. He was one of that group."
Military police are investigating the death.
In September of 2006, a British Army soldier was killed when a British military vehicle rolled on the Trans-Canada Highway near Bassano in southern Alberta.
Mathew John Murray of Tidworth, England, died after the bus lost control en route to a training exercise.
Earlier this month, a soldier suffered at least two gunshot wounds during a live-fire training exercise at CFB Shilo.
