Remains of an ancient marine reptile known as an Ichthyosaur have been discovered in a British water reservoir.

The fossilized remains, colloquially called a 鈥渟ea dragon,鈥 were discovered at the Rutland Water Nature Reserve and is the biggest and most complete skeleton of its kind found to date in the U.K.

It is also thought to be the first Ichthyosaur of its species 鈥 called Temnodontosaurus trigonodon 鈥 in Britain, .

The fossil was found by a member of the county water conservation team during a routine lagoon draining for landscape work in February, 2021. The Ichthyosaur is approximately 180 million years old with a skeleton around 10 metres in length and a skull weighing around one tonne.

Ichthyosaurs first appeared approximately 250 million years ago and went extinct 90 million years ago, the release states, and varied in size from one to more than 25 metres in length, resembling dolphins.

The British Ichthyosaur remains were excavated in August and September 2021 by a team of paleontologists. Two other incomplete and smaller Ichthyosaur remains were found in the same reservoir in the 1970s.

The find is the latest of several recent Ichthyosaur excavations, including one led by Montreal鈥檚 McGill University researchers in Colombia and another .

Correction

An earlier version of this story referred to the Ichthyosaur as a dinosaur, it has been corrected to reflect that it is in fact a marine reptile
