REGINA - The Saskatchewan government is committing more than $850,000 for a weight-loss surgery pilot project in Regina.

Health Minister Don McMorris says there's a need to recognize the incidence of obesity in a responsible way. The Regina clinic will be able to assess about 100 patients a year for treatment, which could include surgery to reduce the size of a patient's stomach.

The clinic will be run by the Regina Qu'Appelle Health Region.

There are nearly 300 patients on the waiting list for obesity surgery in Saskatchewan, and about 20 per cent of those are from outside the province.

The clinic will begin accepting patients in the spring.
