MONTREAL - Quebec is gearing toward opening several supervised-injection sites in the province.

Public health director Alain Poirier says officials are looking at opening a safe-injection site in Montreal in the coming months.

It would become only the second such clinic in North America after Vancouver launched one in 2003.

Poirier says other sites will eventually be set up where demand is highest, likely in urban centres.

Such sites were already factored into the province's public health plan, but Poirier says a recent court decision in favour of Vancouver's Insite clinic has given momentum to the project.

Montreal health officials estimate there are around 23,000 intravenous drug users in the city.
