OTTAWA - The federal government has called off the fight to keep some portions of the Maher Arar report secret.
A Federal Court judge ruled two weeks ago that some of the material previously withheld from public view would not endanger national security and should be released.
The judge decreed, however, that other parts would remain secret. The commission of inquiry, headed by Justice Dennis O'Connor, had previously announced it would not contest that finding.
The Justice Department now says it won't appeal the verdict either, clearing the way for release of at least some of the secret information.
The sections cleared by the court are expected to be made public soon -- perhaps as early as next week.
Arar, a Canadian citizen of Syrian birth, was arrested by U.S. authorities in 2002 and deported to Syria where he was tortured into false confessions of terrorist activity. The O'Connor inquiry concluded the RCMP had wrongly labelled him as having links to al-Qaeda in intelligence files passed on to the Americans.
