HALIFAX - A Nova Scotia inquiry into the death of a mentally ill man in police custody will resume Tuesday after a month-long break.

Howard Hyde died on Nov. 22, 2007, at the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility, one day after he was Tasered by police.

The inquiry began in July and is attempting to determine why the 45-year-old schizophrenic never received the psychiatric help he needed and to recommend ways to prevent similar deaths.

The probe has heard that the 45-year-old musician, who had not been taking his medication, was arrested for an alleged assault and taken into custody.

A medical examiner concluded Hyde died from a condition known as excited delirium stemming from paranoid schizophrenia.

The corrections officer who was in charge at the time of the death told the inquiry earlier that he was unaware Hyde had schizophrenia and had not been taking his medication.
