TORONTO -- The remains of a Canadian citizen were located at the site of the Surfside condo collapse in Florida, authorities confirmed Tuesday.
鈥淕lobal Affairs Canada can confirm that the remains of one Canadian citizen were found at the site,鈥� a spokesperson said in a statement to 愛污传媒. 鈥淎t least three other Canadian citizens remain unaccounted for. Three different families have been affected by this tragedy.鈥�
At least 32 people died when a section of the condo building collapsed in the early morning hours of June 24. Another 113 people remain unaccounted for as a result of the collapse.
鈥淐anadian consular officials in Miami are providing direct support to the family of the deceased and to the families of the unaccounted individuals and are in contact with local authorities to gather additional information,鈥� the spokesperson said.
Citing the Privacy Act, the government did not provide specifics about the deceased Canadian, including hometown or age.
鈥淐anada sends its deepest condolences to the family and friends who lost a loved one in the building collapse,鈥� the government spokesperson said.
Weather has become a factor in search efforts Tuesday as Tropical Storm Elsa began to dump rain as the storm made landfall. Thunderstorms have also forced the pause at times in search efforts while pockets of rubble filled with water.
On Sunday, the remaining portion of the Champlain Towers South building came down in a controlled demolition after concerns the structure would topple during rescue efforts.
No one has been rescued alive since the first hours after the collapse, but rescuers were still holding out hope of reuniting loved ones.
鈥淲e continue to remain focused on our primary mission, and that is to leave no stone unturned and to find as many people as we can and to help bring either some answers to family and loved ones or to bring some closure to them,鈥� City of Miami Fire Rescue Capt. Ignatius Carroll said at a press conference Monday evening.
