In an ironic twist, a protester from the group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals was pied in Newfoundland on Friday.
The unusual scene unfolded in St. Johnâs as a group of people were waiting outside for the arrival of Prime Minister Stephen Harper at an event.
The protester, 21-year-old Emily Lavender, was dressed as a seal and was holding a sign that read: "Harper Stop the Seal Slaughter."
However, a man dressed up in a dog suit arrived, knocked off the head on Lavenderâs seal cost costume and tossed a pie in her face.
The man in the dog suit then took off down the street.
PETA made headlines earlier in the week when one of their members pied Fisheries Minister Gail Shea in the face in protest of the seal hunt.
After Fridayâs sneak pie attack, Lavender told reporters that the Shea incident wasnât out of line.
"It's not nearly as embarrassing as the blood on her hands,â she said. âAnd it's time she stop supporting the largest massacre of marine mammals on the planet."
The dog-costumed man wasnât the only person who took offence to Lavenderâs protest.
Standing nearby, local Wallace Ryan, wearing a shirt that read âIf seals were ugly, nobody would give a damn,â told Lavender to go home.
"We're here to point out that PETA has incited violence and hate against Newfoundland and Labrador for years," he said.
Itâs not clear if any organized group was behind Fridayâs pie plot.
