A former Pakistani cabinet minister has been officially arrested in connection with the suspected murder of a Canadian woman who had been staying at his home.
Shahid Jamil Qureshi has been under investigation since he brought the lifeless body of Canadian Kafila Siddiqui to an Islamabad hospital on June 9th.
Three days later, Qureshi resigned as minister of state for communications.
Qureshi was initially charged with illegal confinement, but a charge of murder was later levied.
A city court judge granted a police request for Qureshi's official arrest Friday after detectives told a city court that Siddiqui appeared to have been murdered.
Siddiqui, who is married, was sharing a home with the cabinet minister while she worked as a consultant, CP reports.
Rumours have swirled since Siddiqui died, CP reports. One rumour alleges that the woman, of Toronto, was held captive by the cabinet minister and was tortured to death.
According to another rumour she was pregnant -- though police say post-mortem tests have not proven that to be the case.
In another twist, CP reports that Siddiqui's husband, Suleman Qaiser maintains he was worried about his wife and asked for help, but his requests were ignored.
