MONTREAL - Bloc Quebecois Leader Gilles Duceppe is refusing to retract comments suggesting the Conservative's get-tough approach to youth crime risks serving up 'young flesh' to imprisoned sex offenders.

Wide-ranging crime legislation promised by Stephen Harper would make it easier to condemn 14-year-olds to life in prison.

The Conservative leader has said Duceppe's remarks are extreme, irresponsible and unacceptable.

But the Bloc leader says he won't retract the comments because he's right.

Speaking at the Universite de Montreal, Duceppe said Harper's priority is to send 14-year-olds to prison, even though that would violate an international agreement on children's rights.

In Victoria, Harper said ordinary people believe the law against young offenders must be toughened and those are the people he has chosen to listen to.
