A Liberal candidate in a Brampton riding has filed a police report claiming thousands of election signs have been stolen from front yards.

The Liberal campaign manager for incumbent Gurbax Malhi is accusing the Conservative camp in the Bramalea-Gore-Malton riding of being behind the missing signs.

The team working for Conservative candidate Stella Ambler vehemently denied the accusations.

Malhi's campaign manager John Friesen says that more than 2,000 signs have either disappeared or have been destroyed since the campaign began. He alleges that two people who work for Ambler drove up to the signs and grabbed them before dumping them in the Etobicoke creek.

Friesen says he doesn't have any videos or pictures that prove his allegations. However, that didn't stop him from filing a complaint with Peel police.

None of the allegations have been proven in court.

"They are playing games," said Jeff Bangs, an Ambler campaign worker.

He told CTV Toronto the allegations are unfounded and insulting and said they prove that the contest is a close one.

"We are giving him a hell of a fight," he said. "I think he's really starting to feel the heat."

During the last election, Malhi cruised to an easy victory, beating his closest challenger by 9,000 votes.

It's not the first time police have had to get involved in an election campaigns.

Last week in Toronto, police were called to investigate at least 30 cases where Liberal supporters had their homes vandalized with graffiti. A number of people reported having their car break lines cut and their phone and cable lines severed. Others reported receiving menacing phone calls warning them to take down their Liberal signs.
