THE HAGUE, Netherlands - Former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic says he wants to use DNA tests to establish that the death toll from the Srebrenica massacre has been exaggerated.

Karadzic has asked for access to DNA ahead of his Yugoslav war crimes tribunal trial on charges of genocide and persecution of non-Serbs during Bosnia's 1992-95 war.

Karadzic told a pretrial hearing Thursday he believes the death toll at the July 1995 massacre of Muslims by Serb forces in Srebrenica is "thousands" below the widely accepted figure of about 8,000.

Prosecutors have charged Karadzic with genocide for allegedly masterminding the mass slayings, which are considered Europe's worst atrocity since World War II.

No date has been set for Karadzic's trial to begin.
