Tributes pour in for 'fearless' Canadian comic Norm Macdonald

Tributes, well wishes and funny anecdotes have begun pouring in for the late Canadian comic Norm Macdonald, who died Tuesday at age 61 of cancer.

Macdonald, who was a stand-up comedian, writer and actor with a signature deadpan delivery, was a staple in the comedy TV world, with appearances on The Drew Carey Show and NewsRadio.

He was also the former Saturday Night Live 鈥淲eekend Update鈥 anchor, a much-loved position that cemented his influence on the comedy scene.

On Twitter, news of his death spread quickly, with comedy legend 鈥渨e loved Norm Macdonald. One of a kind.鈥

David Letterman called him 鈥渢he best鈥 in 鈥渆very important way in the world of stand-up,鈥 , adding that Macdonald鈥檚 famous 鈥渕atter-of-fact delivery leveled 鈥 audiences.

Famed Canadian comedian Jim Carrey also on Twitter, writing 鈥渕y dear friend Norm Macdonald passed after a brave 10 year battle. He was one of our most precious gems. An honest and courageous comedy genius. I love him.鈥

Adam Sandler called Macdonald the 鈥渕ost fearless funny original guy we knew,鈥 . 

American comic and writer Patton Oswalt , saying 鈥淕ood bye, Norm. You were never not 100% hilarious.鈥

Canadian actor Jay Baruchel called Macdonald a 鈥渟incere hero鈥 and a 鈥渂oundless source of inspiration鈥 since he was a teenager 鈥淗e was also the rarest of beings: a truly original artist. The world鈥檚 loss is Canadian heaven鈥檚 gain. We will never see his like again,鈥 the rest of the tweet reads.

Seth Rogan of Macdonald, he modelled his early career on the comedians delivery style, writing 鈥渨e lost a comedy giant today. One of the all time greats. RIP.鈥

Film critic Richard Crouse called Macdonald鈥檚 death 鈥渋ncredibly sad鈥 on CTV鈥檚 News Channel Tuesday, adding that it was the late comedians 鈥渆thos鈥 to put comedy first and everything else second, including his private bout with cancer.

鈥淗e was a fearless comic,鈥 Crouse continued.

It was a sentiment echoed by Yuk-Yuk鈥檚 co-founder Mark Breslin on CTV鈥檚 News Channel Tuesday, who said Macdonald stood apart as 鈥渘ot a lot of comics can be described by the word dignified.鈥

鈥淗e was intelligent, he forced the audience to come to his own level of comedy and all with this twinkle in his eye, in those beautiful blue eyes of his, to let you know that everything was a joke, and a good one too,鈥 Breslin said of Macdonald.

Breslin recalled that Macdonald鈥檚 first stand-up gig was at a Yuk-Yuk鈥檚 in Ottawa, and that he was so good 鈥渋t only took three nights on amateur night before he was moved up鈥orm was a fantastic comic in every way, shape and form.鈥 

Welsh actor and comedian Rob Brydon a 鈥済lorious comedian鈥 and 鈥渦nique鈥 on his Twitter account. Conan O鈥橞rien, The Iron Sheik, Ken Jeong, Jennifer Sterger and Seth MacFarlane have also penned tributes to Macdonald online.

Jon Stewart kept his tribute to Macdonald brief and to the point online, 鈥渘o one could make you break like Norm Macdonald. Hilarious and unique.鈥

Canadian politicians chimed in on social media as well.

Conservative Leader Erin O鈥橳oole to Macdonald鈥檚 family and friends, writing 鈥淐anada is known for producing some of the greatest comedians, and Norm Macdonald is certainly one of the reasons why鈥e will be missed.鈥

Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau said 鈥渢he world was a much funnier place because Norm Macdonald was in it鈥 in his condolence adding that Canada had 鈥渓ost a comedic genius.鈥

Ontario Premier Doug Ford that he was 鈥渧ery sad to hear鈥 of Macdonald鈥檚 death, and that 鈥渉is work brought joy to millions around the world.鈥
