VANCOUVER - About 100 members of the armed forces from Edmonton are in B.C.'s Lower Mainland setting up emergency headquarters to prepare for floods along the Fraser River.

Lt. Mark MacIntyre, spokesman with the Canadian Forces, says the members of CFB Edmonton specialize in setting up emergency headquarters.

The personnel have also set up communications equipment at the headquarters to prepare for the potential emergency.

MacIntyre says all bases across the country are capable of setting up emergency headquaters, but Edmonton was closest to the area in danger of flooding.

Meanwhile, in Surrey, police, firefighters and rescue volunteers staged an emergency evacuation rehearsal.

They combed about 1,000 houses along the Fraser River flood plain, making contact with residents and informing them what to do during an emergency.
