A court has ordered Health Canada to reconsider its decision not to review the environmental effects of a popular herbicide.

Federal Court says the department must look again at new evidence suggesting that glyphosate, commonly known as Roundup, may create toxic effects when it is used with another chemical.

The court heard there have been more than 15 studies since 1999 that found such combinations could harm humans and animals.

Justice Michael Kelen ruled that Health Canada didn't explain or justify its refusal to call a review in light of those studies.
