The parents of a two-month-old baby girl are facing charges after the infant was left unattended inside a hot vehicle in Markham, Ont. earlier this week, police say.

York Regional Police say they responded to a call from a “concerned citizen” on July 19 regarding a baby who had been left unattended “for at least 15 minutes” in a hot car that was in a Toronto-area Costco parking lot.

Police broke the window of the car to rescue the baby, who officers say was showing “signs of distress.” The little girl was treated by paramedics.

Police officers located the parents, who have been subsequently charged with leaving a child unattended.

The Children’s Aid Society is involved in the matter, as the parents were charged under the Child and Family Services Act. They are due in court on Aug. 22.

The names of the parents are not being released in order to protect the child’s identity.
