A private funeral service was held today for six victims of last week’s mass murder in Edmonton.

The traditional Buddhist ceremony took place at a downtown Edmonton chapel, where family and friends gathered to say their final goodbyes. Approximately 150 people in total attended the service.

The ceremony went very well, very peaceful,” said Phap Hoa, chief abbot of the Truc Lam Monastery. “And lots of people bring lots of tears and lots of support and comfort for the family.”

Eight people, including two children, were killed in two separate homes last week. The suspect, 53-year-old Phu Lam, was also found dead from an apparent suicide at a restaurant outside the city.

Police say Lam killed his wife, Thuy Tien Truong, 35, and her eight-year-old son Elvis Lam in a northeast Edmonton home. The bodies of Thanh Ha Thi Truong, 33, her daughter Valentina Nguyen, 3, as well as Thi Dau Le, 55, Van Dang Truong, 55 and Viet Nguyen, 41, were found in the same house.

Lam later shot another woman, Cyndi Duong, in a southwest Edmonton home. Duong, a 37-year-old mother of three, was laid to rest on Monday.

The murders have shocked Edmonton, especially the city’s Vietnamese community. CTV Edmonton’s Laura Tupper reported Tuesday that members of the community are trying to raise money for Tam Nguyen, who lost his wife, Ha Truong, and his daughter Valentina in the massacre.
