MONTREAL -- Labour unions, community groups and students are among those taking part in a march against the federal government's EI reforms today in Montreal.
Protesters say the changes unfairly target seasonal workers and make it too difficult to qualify for employment insurance.
They say the changes will cause major problems for workers and their families who depend on employment insurance to make ends meet during their off-season.
The changes have sparked protests across the country, particularly in Quebec and the Maritimes, where many workers have seasonal jobs.
Under the new rules, those who frequently claim EI need to prove they're actively seeking work and will be required to take available jobs even if they pay less than their previous work.
Human Resources Minister Diane Finley has said the changes will better connect Canadians with available jobs in their area.
The government estimates the changes will save $12.5 million this year and $33 million next year.
