Edmonton officials are urging drivers to slow down after a driver was clocked going four times the speed limit in a school zone.

The car was detected driving at 120 km/h near St. Richard Catholic Elementary School on Nov. 4, a few minutes before the lunch bell rang. A photo radar van detected the vehicle, and took a photo of the car. The posted speed limit in that area is 30 km/h between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Gerry Shimko, from the Office of Traffic Safety, said that vehicles travelling at that speed are endangering lives.

"You have an individual who is putting the entire school population at risk by travelling at that rate, knowing full well that it's going to take 102 metres to react and stop at any indication of anybody coming out of the school," he told CTV Edmonton.

In the photo taken by the radar van, the car's brake lights are on, suggesting the driver slowed down moments before the van detected the speeding car.

Now, the owner of the vehicle will have to attend a mandatory court appearance, even if they were not the driver at the time. The owner could also face a maximum fine of $2,300.

The Office of Traffic Safety says that so far this year it has handed out 15,000 tickets for speeding in school zones.
