A day before Remembrance Day, more than a dozen Second World War veterans from Ontario will be awarded France’s highest honour.

George Bova, 94, is among the men who will receive the Légion d’Honneur at a ceremony in Ottawa on Nov. 10.

Bova flew 60 missions in a Lancaster Bomber, an assignment so dangerous most men did only about 10.

Bova has Alzheimer’s Disease, but still has clear memories of wartime, including the friends he left behind in Europe.

The veteran credits his success in coming out alive to a good luck charm: a toy elephant named “Little Joe,” which he still has today.

Bova said he will accept the award not only for himself but for the friends who died.

“There were rough days,” he said.

France has so far awarded the Légion d’Honneur to about 800 Canadian veterans.
