LAHORE, Pakistan - Police say a chief suspect in the kidnapping for ransom of a British boy in Pakistan has been killed when two accomplices tried to spring him from police custody.

Police official Tariq Abbas said Friday the suspect was killed during a shootout when the two men tried to free him from a police van taking him to court in Gujarat city.

He said the accomplices were also killed in the shootout with police Thursday.

Abbas says the suspect Safeer, alias Safeera, played a major role in the kidnapping.

The kidnap victim, Sahil Saeed, who is of Pakistani origin, was snatched March 4 from his grandparents' house in central Pakistan. He was released 12 days later and is now in Manchester, northern England, where he lives with his parents.
